Description
The S8 is a surprisingly powerful, ultra-compact subwoofer. It is designed to add low frequency support to any EM Acoustics loudspeaker system, particularly in installation applications. The optimally-tuned bandpass enclosure provides significant low frequency output in a discreet and compact footprint enclosure, without the need for corrective equalisation or extensive processing.
The compact enclosure is constructed from premium 12mm (1/2”) multi-laminate Birch plywood, and houses a single 2” voice coil, 8” (203mm) neodymium LF drive unit. This drive unit is accessed from a removable panel on the underside of the enclosure.
For flexibility in installation use, the enclosure includes thirteen M10 threaded attachment points allowing the suspension of the enclosure horizontally, on its side, or even grille-down. The threaded points are positioned relative to the centre of gravity so that the subwoofer will hang level regardless of orientation. Plastic protective feet are fitted to the bottom as standard, but alternative positions on one side are offered to protect the enclosure finish if installed on its side. Two locking Phoenix 2-pole connectors are provided for input and enclosure link, significantly recessed into the back of the enclosure. A machined channel and the chamfered lower rear enclosure edge keep cabling out of the way in compact spaces. Lastly a hex-punched stainless steel grille backed with acoustically transparent mesh completes the cosmetic appeal.
The enclosure is finished in an impact and weather resistant black or white textured polyurethane finish as standard. RAL colour matching and weather-protected outdoor installation options are also available.
The S8 requires an active crossover to function correctly – although the choice of filter points is very wide, allowing the user to tailor the response to exactly what is required.
The S8 is intended to add low frequency power and extension to systems based around the smaller products within EM Acoustics’ product range, particularly in applications where compact footprint, low height and low weight are critical.
The S8 requires a single amplifier channel, and external DSP for active high/low pass filters and limiters. As such, it is recommended to be used with EM Acoustics’ range of Advanced System Amplifiers. It is however possible to use other DSP-enabled amplifiers, or conventional amplifiers with external DSP. Suitable DSP settings are provided on the EM Acoustics website. The amplifier channel should be capable of delivering 300-400W RMS into an 8-ohm load.
